Sara Marhamo Designs

One thing I love about Boston is the emerging talent in art and fashion, especially with young designers. Fashion Designer Sara Marhamo caught my eye with her use of funky prints that surprisingly go well together, as well as the rich colors and unexpected material that is carefully tailored and just pretty much aesthetically pleasing. Her collections have been shown in numerous fashion shows around Boston. With a Lebanese background, she grew up in Boston and became a graduate with a BFA in fashion design, she  is currently designing and creating in Boston’s South End.

I was lucky enough to ask her a couple of questions about her inspirations and creating her last collection!

1. How would you describe your style/designs?

In three words; deliberate visual excess. In a few more; I’d say that my style is all about controlled chaos and that influences all my designs. I really have a great appreciation for a sense of craftsmanship and quality in clothing. My work is about knowing how things are supposed to be put together and mixing that up a bit. I also have an insane love of color. The girl in the little black dress will always look chic at a party, but everyone will remember the girl in purple or red.

2. Any particular thing that inspired your collection?

This last collection was inspired initially by Russian nesting dolls- Matryoshkas. I love dolls in general and Matryoshkas are especially beautiful for their colors, as well as the concept of nesting- layering the dolls within each other. From that point it was just a lot of research on folkloric stories and peasant dress that followed.

3. What designers do you look up to?

Dries Van Noten for his use of color, Karl Lagerfeld for being good at everything, Kate and Laura Mulleavy for Rodarte for making messy chic.

(How gorgeous is this dress?) want!
